A Leader, Humanitarian, and Warrior

Chief Custalow Sr served as the Tribal Leader of the Mattaponi from October 1969 until October 1977. Afterwards he served thirteen years on the Native American Rights Fund, a national charity that raises money for legal representation for American Indians.

Chief Custalow lived on the Mattaponi Indian Reservation in King William County VA, 125 acres of land salvaged from the tribe's historic territory that once spanned several states.

Chief Curtis L."War Horse" Custalow Sr. was not only a great fighter for the rights of Native Americans, he was a true hero. Chief Custalow fought in the Battle of the Bulge in WWII and received three Bronze Stars.

Chief Little Eagle Custalow, died March 21, 2003 at his home on the Mattaponi Reservation in King William County, VA. Chief Custalow , 90 years old, was a descendant of Pocahontas, and during his tenure as Chief, ( 25 years continued the "Mattaponi Treaty of Tribute to the Commonwealth of Virginia," since the treaty's 1646 signing and 1677 ratification with the King of Enlgand.

Chief Custalow was born November 14, 1912 on the Mattaponi Indian Reservation.
