We are dedicating the photo page to our Native American ancestors, for
the long hard battle they fought to achieve equality and dignity. If they could
only speak!
James Tapp, son of Vincent and Molly Jett Tapp was born October 5, 1764 in Virginia and died in 1860. He married Sally Chewning, January 5, 1794 in Virgina, Sally was born November 1773 and died 1834. James moved with his Father and Mother, Vincent and Molly to Spartanburg South Carolina, however they returned to Culpeper County about about 1790. Vincent died in early 1791, afterwards several of their children returned to South Carolina, James remained in Virginia. There is indication that Molly returned to South Carolina with her children. James is the third great grandson of King William Taptico.(Photo courtsey of Charlie Tapp, Tucson AZ.)
Martha Ann Tapp was born December 1874 in Van Buren County Arkansas and died July 24 1947 at Leachville Arkansas. Martha married Jacob L Byrd, September 15, 1889 in Cleburne County, Arkansas. Martha was the fifth great grand daughter of King William Taptico. Martha's father, William Tapp served in the war of 1812 while living in South Carolina.(Photo courtsey of Al Byrd Sierra Vista AZ.)
Moses Tapp was born October 8, 1813 in Culpeper VA and died in Kentucky April 5, 1893. In 1836, Moses married Mary Ann Craven in Kentucky. Mary Ann was born January 1, 1819 in Kentucky and died December 19, 1861 in Kentucky.
Moses is the son of Nimrod and Hester Tharpe and grandson of Vincent and Mary (Molly)
Jett.
Mary E (McDaniel) Hillis gg granddaughter of John Tapp and Mary Morgan.
Charles Tapp is a member of the Wicocomico Indian Nation and is a direct descendant of James Tapp and Sally Chewning. I asked Charles permission to use his photograph because of the very strong resemblance to James Tapp. I believe as we continue our research on the Taptico/Tapp, it is becoming more and more evident that we have a strong Indian heritage not only through the Wicocomico but through marriages to other Nations such as the Cherokee.
